The generic approach is based on the consideration that all linguistic communication is essentially a rule-governed, structured, culturally conventionalized form of social interaction. Therefore, forms and patterns can be identified for all acts of communication and interaction that can be described as genres. These genres, both literary and non-literary, represent the fundamental forms of communication that must also be acquired in foreign language teaching. A significant advantage of the genre approach over traditional learning methods is that it allows for holistic practice of communication forms from the very beginning of foreign language learning, which can then be developed into increasingly complex forms throughout a language course. The volume introduces the diverse forms of written, oral, and media communication.
