If you're skilled, you can certainly make a good life for yourself here as a police officer. Massimo isn't as sure about this as Bernhild, the resolute innkeeper of the 'Zum Wassermann' guesthouse. The unusual altitude in the Engadin gives Capaul a headache; he still feels nauseous from the journey over the Albulapass, but there's no time to settle in. Before his official start of duty, he must respond to his first call: a barn is on fire in Zuoz. Shortly thereafter, its owner, the eccentric retiree Rainer Pinggera, dies. It appears to be a natural death. However, adhering to his love for order, Capaul investigates some inconsistencies. In doing so, he gets to know the entire social spectrum of the Upper Engadin, from the St. Moritz jet set to the taciturn farmers in the dimly lit village tavern. But the long-time locals are not pleased when someone among them stirs up trouble.
