Product details

A close, continuous commentary on Kant's doctrine of organized beings in the "Critique of Judgment" is a desideratum for both Kant research and the philosophy and history of life sciences. Furthermore, there are so far only a few interpretations that comprehensively explore Kant's philosophy of biology and attempt to place it within the multifaceted historical contexts of early modern natural science. This book fills these gaps. It defends the thesis that Kant characterizes organized beings through three types of forces and laws - mechanical, physically teleological, and morally teleological forces and laws - whose compatibility in human consciousness and in the experiential world, as it appears to humans, is based on the regulative idea of their unity in the creative, theoretically practical consciousness of God.
