The question of the meaning of life is considered by many people to be the quintessential philosophical problem. However, in academic philosophy, this issue has long been neglected. The primary goal of this book is to fill this gap in two steps: First, it must be examined what significance the question actually holds. This involves determining the systematic place of this problem within philosophy: it is not, as many believe, ethics or the philosophy of religion, but rather a modern metaphysics developed on a Kantian foundation in this book. Secondly, the terms "life" and "meaning," as well as their relationship, need to be clarified. The second step focuses on the critical analysis of existing answers. Initially, two approaches that have emerged in modernity are dismissed.
