In his introduction to epistemology, the focus is not only on the introductory presentation of obvious fundamental concepts of epistemology such as "knowledge," "reasons," and "justification," but also on the question of how knowledge or understanding occurs in the world. Knowledge and claims to knowledge belong to a social environment that, in turn, is part of the world as a whole. Against the backdrop of this embedding of knowledge in the entirety of the world, the relationship between knowledge and the world is examined. For every understanding of the world is also an event in the world. Accordingly, epistemology cannot be pursued entirely outside the context of other philosophical questions. Topics from modern and contemporary theories of intentionality and ontology are also consulted to clarify the question of what knowledge is.
