The word of God is a way to access reality. This statement seems surprising in a time when the natural sciences have become the authoritative source for interpreting reality. In widespread reactions to their success, the scope of the word of God is often limited to an unspecified afterlife or to the subjective feelings and moral actions of individuals. However, phenomenological analysis indicates that the reality with which the embodied human being has always been connected is broader than what objective representations can show. Narrative forms and metaphorical expressions reveal reality in a way that is distinct from the natural sciences. The interpretation of texts using hermeneutical methods reveals fragile and tension-marked orders.
