For many readers, the two-volume novel represents a highlight in the author's oeuvre. The manuscript is one of the few surviving manuscripts of May's novels. After almost a century, the opus is now published for the first time exactly according to this original text, accompanied by an extensive historical-critical apparatus in Volume II by Hans Wollschläger, who also handled the transcription.
