The Karl May Publishing House was founded in 1913 by Dr. Euchar Albrecht Schmid, who personally knew Karl May. Today, the publishing house is run by his grandson Bernhard Schmid in its third generation. By the end of 2008, the famous green-gold series of the collected works of Karl May will comprise a total of 90 volumes (volumes 1 to 88, as well as 91 and 92), along with numerous special editions. Volume 88 contains the two standalone stories "Deadly Dust" and "In the 'Wild West' of North America," which later served as the basis for "Winnetou III." "Deadly Dust" marks the origin of the "Old Shatterhand" legend. The title is also available as an e-book.
