Four poets and their bizarre entourage are on their way to the Carpathians. In Tschortopil, the festival of the resurrected spirit is set to take place, an event that is a mix of Woodstock, orgy, and folkloric masquerade. The rock star from Leningrad arrives by train, while the "cream of the nation," the young poets from the provinces, are picked up by a Chrysler Imperial, driven by a Ukrainian emigrant who runs a private clinic in Lucerne and poses as a sponsor. "Carpathian Carnival," written in September/October 1990, is the legendary iconoclastic text of 30-year-old poet and performance artist Yuri Andrukhovych, who shattered the Ukrainian literary language to reinvent it.
