Susanne Kleinschmitt - in her late thirties, single and childless - lives with her bedridden mother in an old forester's house near Mayen in the Eifel region. The nurse is completely devoted to her profession and the tireless care of her tyrannical mother: a good Samaritan with no claim to her own happiness - until she meets Andreas Vogel, who has been serving a ten-year sentence for the murder of his wife at the Diez correctional facility. When prison psychiatrist Evelyn Meinecke asks her at a class reunion to occasionally write a letter to Vogel regarding his rehabilitation, Susanne - for whom helping has become almost second nature - immediately agrees. However, what begins as a harmless correspondence soon turns into a blind, desperate love. Susanne ignores all warnings and plans in the hope of Vogel's early release.
