In Darmstadt, most of the drawings from the Romantic period were acquired during their creation, meaning contemporaneously. What were the reasons for this, what was the quality of these works, how do they reflect the struggles of their time, and what is their relationship to history? Until now, the Darmstadt Romantic collection has primarily been showcased through monographic exhibitions. The exhibition "Between Enlightenment and Romanticism" at the Hessian State Museum Darmstadt now for the first time cuts through the extensive collection to go beyond the local context and highlight the regional significance of the art promotion that took place in the former Grand Duchy of Darmstadt. The catalog provides insight into the essential tasks, forms of work, and characteristics of Romantic drawing through four essays and a thematically organized section of illustrations.
