What is "being in the now" and how can one still paint in a world that is increasingly shifting into the immaterial realm of the digital? In light of the unstoppable virtualization of reality, Henning Strassburger questions the conditions of pictorial narration. With "Bleaching is Teaching," he has set up an exhibition at the Kunstverein Reutlingen that reflects on the current abysses and possibilities of painting through and with images: "One no longer sees innocently, so I, as a painter, cannot either. One constantly paints the copy or reproduction. Automatically." The book is conceived as a complex visual essay that includes the works shown at the Kunstverein Reutlingen as well as exhibitions, performances, and archival material from 2007 to 2016.
