With his works from the 1920s in the style of New Objectivity, Josef Wedewer (Lüdinghausen 1896-1979) provided insight into a different everyday reality, primarily set in the countryside, away from the rapidly changing cities. As a representative of a regionally influenced Westphalian artistic identity, he worked outside the urban avant-garde after studying at the Art Academy in Kassel, but was not isolated from it. Thus, his contemporary landscape paintings incorporated elements of Impressionism and Cubism, as well as reflections on early modern Dutch painting, which shaped his unmistakable style.
