Grassland is so common in our modern cultural landscape that it is often perceived merely as a green area. This fact alone reflects the modern monotony of these once diverse communities of life. Rare plant and animal species have largely disappeared. However, grassland deserves intensive attention as the foundation for horse husbandry, as it provides food and habitat. At the same time, horses are increasingly replacing cattle in grasslands designed for them. This raises the question of the interchangeability of cattle and horses. Grazing animals are now being used in nature conservation for landscape maintenance. How do these animals interact with their environment, and how do various factors affect the grazing animal, the horse? What impact might modern grassland have on the health of horses? Health and ecological connections are examined.
