Finland is the guest country of the Frankfurt Book Fair, and Sofi Oksanen is its star. The novel follows the fate of three Estonians during and after World War II: Roland, a principled Estonian freedom fighter; his power-hungry, ruthless cousin Edgar; and Edgar's wife Juudit, who falls in love with a German officer. It is a masterfully composed novel about the pursuit of power, love, and betrayal. Estonia during the German occupation: While Roland is in hiding, still believing in Estonian liberation, Edgar tries to penetrate the center of power. His wife Juudit falls in love with a high-ranking German officer, unaware that her husband wants to climb the career ladder through this very officer. After the war, the cards are reshuffled, Estonia is under Soviet occupation, and once again it is Edgar who hopes for his future.
