Product details

We were the scene! Dummse Tünn, Schäfers Nas, Beckers Schmal, Abels Män, Frischse Pitter, and the Lange Tünn... names that still resonate in Cologne. Men who gained fame and wealth through their activities in the Cologne underworld, whose stories are brutal and wicked, icy and hardened, but also naive, quirky, and above all, authentic. In the 1960s and 1970s, Cologne was dubbed "Chicago on the Rhine" by the tabloid press. An impressive crime statistic, a unique scene, and the unmistakable milieu repeatedly brought the cathedral city into the headlines. It was about prostitution and violence, gambling, fraud, and fencing. The main players in the brothels, strip clubs, bars, and gambling dens on the rings, in Friesenstrasse, at Eigelstein, and along the Rhine are well-known and feared in the city. It was a time of open hostilities and honest fistfights. The milieu still obeyed the crude laws of criminal decency. In retrospect, the pimps, gamblers, and bouncers of yesteryear like to portray themselves as honorable crooks. They all still dream of the old days: when champagne flowed freely and money was hoarded in plastic bags and birdhouses, when Rolex watches, snakeskin suits, and big cars were indispensable, and when the girls married their pimps... Those who were big back then have now found themselves back at the bottom, but myths and legends continue to thrive – as part of Cologne's city history. Many private photos make the stories lovingly penned by Michael Mueller and Peter F. Müller come alive even more!.
