Product details

What is it like to discover that your father was an assassin? Traudl Bünger knew her father as a caring man she could always rely on, but he also held rigid opinions. Even as a child, she sensed that he was surrounded by a secret he never spoke of. After his sudden death, she begins to uncover this secret - and is catapulted back to the early 1960s. Germany has just been divided by the Wall, and Chancellor Konrad Adenauer wants to establish the Federal Republic of Germany as a reliable international partner. A conflict arises that emotionally charges the young Federal Republic, in which Traudl Bünger's father plays an active role. In the autumn of 1962, he travels to Italy with like-minded individuals. The mission's goal: to denounce violations of international law against "ethnic Germans" in South Tyrol. The means: explosives. The result: one dead and numerous injured. What drove her father to this act at the age of 27? What kind of person was he? Traudl Bünger's research takes her to numerous archives and three countries. She begins to speak with relatives about the events of that time. In doing so, she not only delves into the depths of her family's history but also takes us deep into the history of the Federal Republic, the Cold War, and its propaganda battles. "Iron Silence" portrays a young country that must reposition itself while consistently overlooking the shadows of its past - to this day.
