Right at the beginning of her autobiographical essay, Virginie Despentes makes it clear for whom she is writing: for the ugly women, the poorly treated, the untouched, the dissatisfied, those who don't fit into any boxes. She includes herself in this group as well. At the age of seventeen, she was raped and left to cope with the traumatic consequences and fears that still accompany her today. She had to find her own way to deal with the trauma, a path that ultimately led her through prostitution and provocation to writing. The book is an angry pamphlet against the madness of masculinity, against the reduction of human beings, whether female or male, to gender and role clichés. It is a plea for the right to self-determination and for stepping out of roles, against the victim mentality.
