Until the mass unemployment that emerged in West Germany in the 1970s, the issue of poverty was not a topic in the Federal Republic of Germany. However, especially since the 1980s, this has changed significantly; poverty has become an important social problem. Today, in the early 21st century, despite a high level of prosperity, the number of people affected by poverty and precarious wealth in Germany is steadily increasing. Particularly, child poverty – a consensus among poverty researchers – has clearly risen over the past thirty years and remains at a high level. In this context, child poverty generally refers to the impact of poverty on children and adolescents, rather than a societal shortage of children.
