London, November 1968: Hippie communes are occupying houses, John Lennon and Yoko Ono are celebrating their "alchemical wedding" at the Royal Albert Hall, and the galleries are filled with artworks that powerfully challenge the viewer's gaze. Detective Sergeant Breen finds himself in this colorful yet nebulous world when the body of a young man is discovered in a burned-down house. The circumstances of the death are mysterious, and the deceased is not only a well-known playboy and art collector but also the son of a rising prime minister. The latter does everything he can to obstruct Breen's investigation. However, this is far from Breen's only problem: he receives death threats almost daily, and he would like to know where he stands with Tozer—before she quits the police force and leaves the city for good. The new case also brings Breen and Tozer together as the mismatched pair.
