Based on the political and societal framework conditions, the research and development work on the safe disposal of radioactive waste, as conducted at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in the Institute for Nuclear Waste Management, is compiled. The organizational forms and the key research topics are mentioned, as well as the current research topics and the institute's involvement in teaching, training, and consulting tasks. The research and development efforts for the safe disposal of radioactive waste at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in the Institute for Nuclear Waste Management are presented. The political and societal framework conditions for this research and development are addressed. The past organizational forms and the most important research topics are discussed, along with the current research topics, including the institute's integration into education.
