The lighting design in automatic visual inspection is of central importance and has a significant impact on the performance of a visual inspection system. This work presents a novel problem-specific lighting design that is motivated by optical feature extraction, which is performed prior to the physical image acquisition. The approach is analyzed signal-theoretically based on a physically grounded camera and lighting model, and is experimentally evaluated in the context of various application scenarios.
