The replacement of mercury in gas discharge lamps is the subject of current research. In this context, electrode-less operation is advantageous. One possibility for this is excitation using plasma-guided microwaves. Special attention is given to lamp fillings based on indium iodide. These discharges are characterized by a strongly pronounced background radiation with very high color rendering indices. The radiation has been attributed to the molecular emission of indium iodide.
