The formation and oxidation of soot in combustion engines with direct fuel injection were investigated experimentally and numerically. The RAYLIX technique, an imaging, two-dimensional, laser-based measurement method, was used for the experimental investigations. The RAYLIX measurements were conducted on two single-cylinder engines, one for the diesel combustion process and the other for the gasoline combustion process, specifically a single-cylinder DI gasoline engine and a single-cylinder DI diesel engine.
