It is one of the friendly assumptions or hopes in the history of humanity that intellectually educated and culturally active individuals would behave differently in a dictatorship than the general population. Unfortunately, apart from a few outstanding examples, this is not the case. Rather, the history of writers, publishers, and booksellers in the Third Reich reveals an alarming degree of conformity, submissiveness, willingness to adapt, opportunism, and indifference towards the Nazi regime and the fate of its victims, which was typical for the vast majority of German society during those years. In his book, Jan-Pieter Barbian examines the behavior of writers, including well-known figures such as Gerhart Hauptmann, Peter Huchel, Erich Kästner, and Ina Seidel during the thirteen years.
