The volume takes up the lines of thought that Ernst Tugendhat elaborated in his book "Ego-Centricity and Mysticism." The religion, which played a marginal role alongside mysticism in the previous book, now comes to the forefront. For the new edition, Ernst Tugendhat has expanded the volume with two new contributions: "Nazism and Universalism. Is Universalist Morality Historically Explainable?" and "Once Again on Normative Equality." Whatever metaphysics may mean, it reduces, according to the thesis of this book, to anthropology, as all metaphysical topics prove to be elements of human understanding. Furthermore, Ernst Tugendhat offers another explanation for the primacy of anthropology: Everything historical loses its validity for us if it can only be justified by tradition; thus, the question of the being of humanity remains when everything is merely a matter of tradition.
