Bielitz (Polish: Bielsko-Biała) in the former Austrian Silesia is special in two ways: 'Little Vienna' was for centuries a German language enclave in a Polish environment. At the same time, the city has been a Protestant religious island in a predominantly Catholic area since the 16th century, making it the 'eye of Austrian Protestantism.' The neighborhood around the large Protestant church is still called 'Bielitzer Zion' (Bielski Syjon) today. Gero Vogl presents Bielitz and its nearly forgotten history. He can rely on the extensive work of his grandfather Richard Ernst Wagner, who served as a Protestant pastor in the city from 1914 to 1945 and was a prominent figure. With a keen sense of the impending upheavals of the 20th century, he compiled chronicles and documents on the city's and community's history.
