Albert Drach's grandiose narrative "Das Goggelbuch," which was created in Drach's precarious exile in southern France in 1942, intertwines a Faustian pact with the tale of Don Juan. The story is set during the time of the poet Tirso de Molina from Spain, who in 1630 introduced the archetypal rogue into literary history with his play "The Trickster of Seville and the Stone Guest." Xaver Johann Gottgetreu Goggel is a faithful servant to various masters, yet he murders, robs, and rapes. The narrative engages in a diabolical game with the tradition of the "moral improvement piece" and can rightly be considered one of Drach's best texts.
