Hanau, the sixth largest city in Hesse and a gem on the Main and Kinzig rivers, is worth a visit. It is a city to discover as the birthplace of the Brothers Grimm, featuring the first Baroque palace on the right bank of the Rhine, modeled after French designs, and the dreamy gem of a spa complex preserved in its original 18th-century state. Hereditary Prince Wilhelm IX., who later became Elector Wilhelm I of Hesse-Kassel, established it as a retreat for himself and his subjects. Even before that, Hanau made architectural history: around 1600, Calvinist refugees founded New Hanau and laid out the streets in a checkerboard pattern.
