The ever-deep black of iron gall inks or the vibrant colors of medieval incunabula undoubtedly surpass the so-called modern inks in both quality and appearance. However, if one wishes to produce individual calligraphies or even entire books out of historical or artistic interest, they quickly encounter certain obstacles when sourcing historical inks: there is a lack of suppliers, and the few inks available are often relatively expensive. On the other hand, if you prepare your own inks, you always have the desired colors available in any quantity - and at a low material cost.
