Author: Gottfried Benn. Gottfried Benn was born on May 2, 1886, in Mansfeld. From 1905 to 1910, he studied medicine at the Kaiser Wilhelm Academy for Military Medical Education in Berlin and received his medical license. In 1912, he published his first collection of poems as a lyrical pamphlet: "Morgue and Other Poems." In 1913, he took over the management of the Pathological Institute at the Municipal Hospital on Sophie-Charlottenstrasse. In 1914, he served as a military doctor in the field and participated in the battles in Belgium. From 1915 to 1917, he was a senior physician in the military government in Brussels before being discharged from the army. In 1917, the collected poems were published by the Verlag der Aktion under the title: "Flesh." Gottfried Benn settled in Berlin as a specialist in dermatology and venereal diseases, where he practiced until 1935. In 1922, the collected writings were published by Erich Reiss Verlag in Berlin. In 1932, Benn became a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts, Department of Poetry. From 1933 to 1934, he was temporarily under the influence of National Socialist ideology. In 1935, Benn left Berlin and was reactivated as a senior staff physician in Hanover. Selected Poems was published, Benn's last publication during the Nazi era. He was heavily criticized in "Das Schwarze Korps" and the "Völkischer Beobachter." From 1937 to 1945, Benn was transferred to Berlin and worked as an expert in military welfare, dealing with care and pension issues. He was expelled from the Reich Chamber of Literature and received a writing ban. In 1943, he served as a senior physician in Landsberg on the Warthe. In 1945, he returned to Berlin. From 1946 to 1948, he opened a practice but faced difficulties in publishing. In 1951, he was awarded the Büchner Prize in Darmstadt by the Academy for Language and Poetry. In 1953, Benn gave up his medical practice. Gottfried Benn died in Berlin on July 7, 1956.
