Suicidality, self-harming and other-directed harmful behavior, as well as panic attacks and dissociative disorders, can be the result when individuals with personality disorders experience acute life crises. The authors provide techniques for competent crisis intervention, specifically tailored to the various forms of expression. People suffering from personality disorders are particularly at risk of falling out of the precariously maintained balance due to acute life crises or trauma. Suicidality, self-harming and other-directed harmful behavior, severe anxiety disorders, and dissociations are common reactions that occur in such situations. Therefore, competent crisis intervention—through psychotherapeutic techniques or additional pharmacological treatment—is of utmost importance in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
