The opening volume of the "Complete Works" contains the first version of his debut "In Steel Storms" (1920), "The Little Wood 125" (1925), which Jünger refers to as "Chronicle from the Trench Battles 1918," the "Excerpt from a Great Battle" with the heroic title "Fire and Blood" (also from 1925), and finally a brief sketch in which Jünger recalls the "Outbreak of War 1914" (1934) twenty years later. Despite a literary stylization, the writings maintain the immediate simplicity characteristic of Jünger's war diary, while the author seeks to capture frontline experiences in a more reflective and systematic manner in his work "The Struggle as an Inner Experience" (Complete Works, Volume 7).
