Ruhrtext
German, Florian Neuner, 2010Product details
Inspired by the dérive experiments of the Situationists, who opposed the conscious subjective appropriation of urban space to the devastation wrought by capitalism and car-centric urban planning, I wander through Germany's largest city, which is actually not a single city but a patchwork of many. This may seem absurd, especially since the Ruhr area consists to a significant extent of automotive zones that are typically driven through rather than walked. Nevertheless, walking seems to me the only way to truly read a city. Transforming my reading of the urban landscape into text, I explore neighborhoods and peripheries, such as Dortmund-Mengede or Hagen-Haspe, Duisburg-Rheinhausen, Bottrop-Kirchhellen, etc., without a destination and without a precise plan, intuitively following the temptations of the terrain (Guy Debord), tracing atmospheres, and psychogeographically mapping the urban landscape.
