An essential contribution to Egon Schiele's international appreciation was made by the early Schiele collector Rudolf Leopold, who began to take an interest in the artist in the 1950s. His art treasures are now housed in the Leopold Museum in Vienna, which possesses the largest and most significant Schiele collection in the world. Diethard Leopold, the collector's son and author of this volume, grew up surrounded by Schiele's works and developed a special affinity and familiarity with the artist and his oeuvre.
