More aptly than the art writer and wife of Franz Roh, Juliane Roh, one cannot describe his photographic artworks. Inspired by his friendship with László Moholy-Nagy, Franz Roh experimented in the field of New Photography in the 1920s and dedicated himself to another passion—his surrealist paper collages. The scope and richness of Franz Roh's artistic work, who was in close contact with colleagues such as George Grosz, Kurt Schwitters, Willi Baumeister, Jan Tschichold, and Max Ernst, only became known towards the end of his life. Above all, he made significant contributions to art history as a theorist of New Objectivity and as the author of standard works on painting from the interwar period. This volume, with a selection of important artworks, texts by and about Franz Roh, as well as biographical details, is a tribute to him.
