The journey from governess to a fully qualified teacher with all rights and responsibilities in the 19th and 20th centuries was arduous and fraught with challenges. No other female profession has provoked as much derision as this one. Yet it was the female teachers who, with their visions and fighting spirit, advocated for girls to gain access to education, to take the Abitur, and ultimately to pursue higher education. Moreover, they developed new educational concepts that focused on "the happy child" instead of unconditional obedience. Not everything was successful, but it is high time to recognize the achievements of these intelligent, rebellious, and emancipated women.
