Product details

Hera Sees Red – and We Have a Royal Time. Beno Meier presents "Hera Sees Red" as a sort of continuation of his delightful "Aphrodite Unadorned" in the Pearl series. It features a monological dialogue between student and teacher about stories from Greek mythology. These are not "old" traditions; rather, the former high school teacher of Latin and Greek has adapted them to the present day. They are easy to understand, fascinating, and highly relevant. Meier's goal was to teach dead languages in a lively manner, using techniques such as defamiliarization, not for practical benefit, but to significantly broaden horizons. One of his students was journalist Werner De Schepper, who wrote the foreword to the book.

"Teacher Meier didn't want us students to give smart answers we had picked up elsewhere. He wanted to hear our questions. And the better, more genuine, and more original our questions were, the livelier his answers became. He would digress more, just like the teacher in the stories of 'Hera Sees Red.' But we enjoyed these digressions because he was a brilliant storyteller. What spurred him on the most was when I, as a teenager, brought in questions and comparisons from my own world. When I compared the old texts with the ones I was currently reading. Then he connected my reading of 'Törless' with the experiences of Orpheus, just as he connects the Argonauts with the Hobbits in the 'Lord of the Rings' films in this little book.".
