The Middle High German "Prose Lancelot" is not only one of the most impressive testimonies of medieval poetry but also one of the most enigmatic: originating in 13th century France, this gigantic cycle of novels intertwines Arthurian chivalry, the world of the Grail, and Christian salvation history. By incorporating the Old French tradition, Daniel Waldmeier explores the extent to which the principle of a spiritual recoding of the chivalric narrative world holds. With the entry of the Christ-like Grail hero Galahad into the narrative, the Arthurian material in the Lancelot trilogy undergoes a peculiar sacralization: spiritual figures instruct the Arthurian knights during their quest for the Holy Grail, which seems to follow a divine plan of salvation. In this literary mode, old theological problems such as the inheritability of ancestral sins are addressed.
