In the early Middle Ages, the trademark "Holy Cologne" emerged. Since the time of Charlemagne, the city asserted a special position in the ranking of holy cities, aiming to place itself directly behind Rome and Jerusalem. But how did the Roman-influenced Agrippina become the German-speaking Cologne and eventually the Sancta Colonia? The Austrian historian Karl Ubl contradicts the widespread thesis that Cologne only gained new significance through a powerful act by Archbishop Brun of Cologne in the 10th century. Due to the migrations, the city had significantly lost population, and Christian life was impaired. Ubl describes how a multitude of churches soon gave the city a new face, how the legends of the Cologne cults of saints emerged, and how the bishop gradually gained control over the city. However, the formation of "Holy Cologne" was not the only development during the Carolingian period: a rapid economic and demographic upswing also swept through the city at that time. Ubl paints a picture of a foreign yet multifaceted era: the self-(re)invention of a city in transition.
