Cleopatra VII Philopator, daughter of Ptolemy XII, ascends to the throne of Egypt at the age of 17. Following her father's wishes and ancient tradition, she does not rule alone but together with her ten-year-old brother Ptolemy XIII, whom she must marry. With determination, courage, and intelligence, she aims to strengthen and expand her nation's power, especially against the Roman Empire. However, under the influence of the eunuch Potheinos and the general Achillas, her brother turns against her. A bloody struggle for the crown of Egypt ensues, and Cleopatra is forced into exile. Yet her resolve to succeed as a woman in a man's world remains unbroken, and she seeks the support of a powerful Roman consul: Gaius Julius Caesar.
