Wolfgang Koeppen's novel fragments were created over a period of nearly sixty years. While the author experienced phases of heightened productivity, such as from 1951 to 1954 when his novels "Tauben im Gras," "Das Treibhaus," and "Der Tod in Rom" were published, he also repeatedly faced the experience of being unable to realize his literary plans. Wolfgang Koeppen was undoubtedly a crisis-ridden author, but perhaps the unfinished and fragmentary nature of his work was not only a hindrance but also a condition of his productivity. Sometimes, it was even the completion itself; the literary critic Marcel Reich-Ranicki referred to Koeppen's 1976 novel "Jugend" as a "completed fragment." Volume 11 of the collected works gathers for the first time the novel fragments left behind by Wolfgang Koeppen, most of which have remained unpublished until now, spanning over sixty years. This includes "Die Jawang-Gesellschaft" from the late 1930s, the projects "Ein Maskenball" and "In Staub mit allen Feinden Brandenburgs" from the 1960s and 1970s, as well as later autobiographically grounded texts such as "Tasso oder die Disproportion" (around 1980) and "Das Schiff" from the late 1980s and early 1990s.
