Without trust, human life is not possible. Permanent distrust hinders life. The assertion that trust is good, but control is better, leads to a compulsion for control that ultimately makes any freedom impossible. Whether our fundamental trust can fully dissolve into immanence or whether it draws from an unacknowledged ontological surplus even among materialists, naturalists, and convinced atheists is a contentious issue that gains new urgency in a time of religious indifference. Faith is a sense of the possible, which has its ultimate foundation in God as the all-determining reality.
