About forty years after the earthly ministry of Jesus of Nazareth, the author Mark recounts the events surrounding Jesus not to present history in an objective sense, but as a foundational story. As such, it answers the question of what significance the unique life and work of the man Jesus holds for the readers. What once happened in Galilee is meant to happen to the readers as well. Only when this occurs does the narrated event reach its goal and become a reality once again, as it did back then. The Gospel of Mark thus revolves around memory as a means of bringing the past into the present. Through the narrative, Jesus' world is recreated, allowing the reader to enter it. The Gospel of Mark should be understood as a deliberately crafted narrative filled with enigmatic elements. The communication processes conveyed by the narrator in the text deserve exploration.
