The Merovingian dynasty shaped the history and fate of Western Europe for around 250 years. This period was characterized by a reliance on Roman administrative practices and ancient cultural heritage, as well as new ruling techniques and a dynamic social development. The book offers an intertwining of personal and dynasty history with central fields of general history, such as the church, society, and personal associations. The evaluation of legal sources, particularly canon law, which have been little considered in previous accounts, allows for a new perspective on the power structures in the Merovingian kingdom.
