Social work supports people who cannot cope on their own. However, it is necessary to clarify how this objective can be justified and to what extent it is actually fulfilled by social work. Is the motivation to help possibly undermined by other motives or consequences of actions? What is morality, and how is it learned? How can professional ethical claims be practically implemented at the various levels of individual actions, institutional cooperation, and the societal-structural level? What do social justice and human dignity mean, and what guidance do these fundamental values provide for social work in practice? These are core questions of ethics in social work.
