Gerontology is a highly interdisciplinary field of science. Aging can only be understood through a synergistic connection of different disciplines. This work, first published in 2004, presents in its completely revised second edition the interdisciplinary nature of gerontology at its core. Psychological, sociological, biological, geriatric, gerontopsychiatric, and other disciplinary aspects are integrated into the presentation of fundamental theoretical, empirical, and methodological questions of gerontology. Furthermore, the societal significance of gerontology and its history from antiquity to the present are elaborated upon, before the final chapter poses the question "Quo vadis Gerontologie?" The book provides a compact framework for the overwhelming array of concepts and theories that exist today.
