According to the widely accepted reading of the Bible, Israel traces its origins back to the patriarchs. The promises were made to the patriarchs, and with them, the God of Israel began the history with His chosen people. This perspective does not align with biblical traditions or Jewish self-understanding. Israel narrates its beginnings as a people of God, distinctly framing it as a story of women with their men and children. Irmtraud Fischer highlights the political dimension of what she calls the "foreparent narratives" and their narrative continuation through the Book of Ruth. The book aims to dismantle anti-Jewish clichés by reinterpreting forgotten or superficially read biblical stories. In doing so, it seeks to emphasize the constitutive significance of women for a Christianity that draws renewed inspiration from the first part of its Bible.
