Between Joseph, the husband of Mary, and the namesake figure from the Old Testament story of Joseph and his brothers, there is a surprising abundance of connections: the theme of dreams and the motif of Egypt, but also the significance of genealogy and justice. The figure of Tamar from Genesis 38, along with Rahab, Ruth, and the mother of Solomon, is among the women in the genealogy in Matthew 1. Ebach demonstrates what perspectives emerge in the first chapters of the Gospel of Matthew when one listens to the full stories of those women. It also becomes clear that the Gospel incorporates the wording of the Hebrew Bible in several places. The beginning of the Gospel of Matthew is simultaneously a continuation; it draws from the stories of the scriptures of Israel, which shine anew as true in the light of the "Genesis" of Jesus. This is particularly evident in tracing the connections.
