The psychological treatment and support of patients and their relatives is an essential component of palliative care, aimed at maintaining the highest possible quality of life and countering psychosocial stressors and feelings such as hopelessness and depressive reactions. Therefore, psychologists are increasingly being integrated into both inpatient and outpatient palliative care. This work provides a well-founded overview of the areas of responsibility, intervention methods, and core psychological concepts. Topics include children, elderly people, and relatives in palliative care, communication with patients, quality of life, illness, and grief processing. Additionally, various psychotherapeutic approaches and interventions for core symptoms are explored. A look at the care structures and practical case studies rounds out the work.
